Green Burial on Bowen Island: Community Information Meeting

You are invited to a community information meeting to explore developing a Green Burial Cemetery on Bowen Island. 

What is Green Burial?

Cemeteries that offer Green Burial practices return bodies to the earth without embalming, caskets, urns or landscaping while cremation produces about 400–600 pounds of CO₂, equivalent to a 500-mile car trip. In contrast, Green Burial focuses on conservation and protection of wild habitats. Biodegradable materials are used including wicker caskets and shrouds. Bodies are buried 3-4 feet. Reforestation of the burial area is done using only indigenous plants. 

The presentation will address questions such as:

• Will Green Burial work on Bowen Island?

• Can a Green Burial Cemetery Happen in My Lifetime?

• What is the Process for Creating a Green Burial Cemetery? 

Discussion will follow on creating a working committee to explore the creation of a Green Cemetery.
